Overview
Join Mark Dumbleton for an unforgettable 6-night, 7-day luxury photographic safari at Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana, one of Africa’s most exciting destinations for serious wildlife photography.
Taking place during the peak of the dry season, this is one of the most rewarding times of year to be in Mashatu. As the landscape dries out and vegetation becomes increasingly sparse, wildlife is drawn towards the remaining water sources, creating exceptional opportunities for close and prolonged encounters. Large herds of elephants gather around water, predators become more active, and the open terrain makes it easier to spot and photograph wildlife.
Our days are structured entirely around photography, with early morning and afternoon game drives timed to take advantage of the best light and most active periods of the day. The dry-season conditions also provide beautiful, clean backgrounds and dramatic light, while the concentration of wildlife often produces the kind of encounters that make Mashatu such a renowned photographic destination.
A particular highlight of the safari is our dedicated time in the famous Matebole underground hide. Built below ground level and positioned close to a busy wildlife area, the hide allows photographers to work at an exceptionally intimate perspective, often at eye level with elephants and other wildlife as they approach the water. We have three dedicated sessions in the hide, giving us the time and flexibility to make the most of changing light and animal behaviour.
With Mark Dumbleton accompanying the group, the focus throughout is firmly on photography. From positioning and camera settings to composition, exposure and making the most of unpredictable wildlife behaviour, Mark will help you get the most from every photographic opportunity.
This is a safari designed for photographers who want more than simply seeing wildlife. It is about being in the right place, at the right time, with the right conditions to create exceptional images, while enjoying the comfort and exclusivity of one of Botswana’s premier safari destinations.

Photography Tour Leader (English)
I’m drawn to those fleeting, extraordinary moments when nature puts on a show so powerful, so humbling, that you can’t help but stop and stare. Whether it’s the raw energy of a thunderstorm tearing across the horizon, a rare weather phenomenon that defies expectation, or a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with wildlife in its element—those are the moments I live for. It’s in the heart of the wilderness, far from the noise and routine of everyday life, where I feel most grounded and most alive. These experiences aren’t just about the thrill; they’re about the emotion, the stillness, the perspective they offer. And through photography, I try to capture and share that feeling with others.
My passion for the natural world started early, shaped by a childhood spent immersed in the bushveld landscapes of South Africa. That connection has only deepened over time, evolving into a lifelong pursuit of exploration and storytelling through imagery. Based in Hoedspruit, on the edge of the Greater Kruger, I’m fortunate to live in one of the most wildlife-rich areas on the continent—a place that constantly feeds my curiosity and creativity.
As a wildlife photographer, I’m always chasing new angles, fresh perspectives, and untouched moments in nature. For me, photography is not just about documentation; it’s about emotion, narrative, and a deep respect for the subjects I encounter. Each image is an attempt to freeze a moment of wonder, to hold on to the sense of awe that only wild places can offer.
