Overview
Join Mark Dumbleton for a 6-night, 7-day photographic safari at Kings Camp in South Africa’s Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, where exceptional wildlife encounters and dedicated photographic opportunities come together in a luxury safari setting.
The Timbavati is renowned for its big cats, large elephant bulls, white rhinos and diverse wildlife. Its mix of open woodlands and natural waterholes provides a variety of photographic settings, from intimate animal portraits to wider compositions that capture wildlife within the surrounding landscape.
A central feature of the safari is full-time access to the Kings Warren photographic hide. Positioned at a popular waterhole, the hide offers a unique, low-level perspective on visiting wildlife. Spending extended periods here allows photographers to work with changing light, experiment with composition and capture natural behaviour as animals approach the water. It also provides an opportunity to create images from a perspective that differs from traditional game-drive photography.
Optional morning and afternoon game drives provide further opportunities to explore the reserve and photograph its wildlife. From leopards and lions to elephants and rhinos, each outing offers the possibility of observing animals in different settings and capturing a range of behaviours, interactions and portraits.
With Mark Dumbleton providing photographic guidance, the workshop caters to photographers looking to improve their skills and make more of every wildlife encounter. Attention can be given to camera settings, composition, exposure and working with changing light, helping you develop your technique and create stronger images in the field.
The experience also extends beyond the game drives and hide sessions, with access to the Kings Camp Photo Studio. Here, Mark will help you select and edit a favourite photograph from the safari, which can then be professionally printed as a lasting memento of your time in the Timbavati.
Combining dedicated access to a photographic hide, flexible game-drive opportunities, expert instruction and the comfort of Kings Camp, this workshop offers a varied photographic experience in one of South Africa’s established big cat destinations.
Private access to three world-class photographic hides
Enjoy exclusive sessions in two of Mashatu’s premier hides—Matebole and Lala Limpopo—designed by photographers for photographers. These underground hides allow for unique, eye-level perspectives of wildlife and are among the best in Africa for capturing close-up moments with elephants, birds, and more.

At Kings Camp, you’ll have unrestricted access to the Kings Warren Hide throughout your stay. Strategically placed near a well-frequented waterhole, it offers incredible photographic opportunities from dawn to dusk—without ever leaving camp.

Mark Dumbleton
Photography Tour Leader (English)
I’m drawn to those fleeting, extraordinary moments when nature puts on a show so powerful, so humbling, that you can’t help but stop and stare. Whether it’s the raw energy of a thunderstorm tearing across the horizon, a rare weather phenomenon that defies expectation, or a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with wildlife in its element—those are the moments I live for. It’s in the heart of the wilderness, far from the noise and routine of everyday life, where I feel most grounded and most alive. These experiences aren’t just about the thrill; they’re about the emotion, the stillness, the perspective they offer. And through photography, I try to capture and share that feeling with others.
My passion for the natural world started early, shaped by a childhood spent immersed in the bushveld landscapes of South Africa. That connection has only deepened over time, evolving into a lifelong pursuit of exploration and storytelling through imagery. Based in Hoedspruit, on the edge of the Greater Kruger, I’m fortunate to live in one of the most wildlife-rich areas on the continent—a place that constantly feeds my curiosity and creativity.
As a wildlife photographer, I’m always chasing new angles, fresh perspectives, and untouched moments in nature. For me, photography is not just about documentation; it’s about emotion, narrative, and a deep respect for the subjects I encounter. Each image is an attempt to freeze a moment of wonder, to hold on to the sense of awe that only wild places can offer.
